Tinanggap ni Carlos Agassi ang kontrabida role sa ikalawang yugto ng seryeng Panday ni Jericho Rosales.

Aminado si Carlos na na-miss niya ang soap opera, gaya ng Sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggan nila ni Claudine Barretto. Hindi na yun nasundan at nag-concentrate na lang siya sa grupong Hunks, na nag-show here and abroad.

Bukod sa guestings sa ASAP, mainstay din si Carlos ng Bora kasama sina Piolo Pascual, Bernard Palanca, Diether Ocampo at Luis Manzano.

But Carlos admits na walang ga'nong challenge sa sitcom at pawang pagpapatawa ang kanilang ginagawa roon. Kaya nang dumating ang offer ng Panday, hindi na siya nagdalawang-isip pa. Kahit all-out kontrabida role ang in-assign sa kanya, he accepted the challenge right away.

"Prior to this project, nag-produce po ako ng sarili kong album. Hindi pala biro ang mag-produce ngayon. I did almost everything, from concept, song selection, video, direction, ako lahat. Ipina-release ko sa Star Records para ma-distribute worldwide.

"When the Hunks went on a US tour last December, nakabenta ako ng 1,000 copies. In two months time, naka-3,000 units kami. Kapag naubos yung 6,000 units, magdaragdag ako ng four more songs and we'll sell it at the same price, P150 each.

"There are six tracks ` Amir, Nagbago Ka, Senorita, True, Alay Ko, and a bonus track, Señorita remix. Rehistrado ito sa PARI and distributed exclusively by Star Records," lahad ni Carlos.

We've known Onemig Bondoc to be one of the very few nice guys in show business. Coming from an affluent family and a degree holder at that, never kaming nakarinig na nasangkot siya sa kahit anong kontrobersya.

We strongly believe that he's every inch a gentleman. Pero nang aminin niya sa isang panayam na totoong minura niya sa phone ang mag-inang Beth at Angelica Jones, nagulat kami (Inamin nga ba? ` IFF).

Hindi lang kami, marami rin ang hindi makapaniwalang capable si Onemig na magwala't magmura, lalo't mga babae ang kaaway niya. Kahit saang anggulo tingnan, base sa naglabasang katwiran ng magkabilang kampo, hindi sapat ang dahilang sinabi ni Onemig para umabot siya sa ganoong sitwasyon.

Aminin man o hindi, busy si Angelica. Patuloy siyang kinukuha to endorse this and that product line. May mga show siya in and outside the metro. Never mind kung nag-hit man ito o hindi. At least, may dumarating na imbitasyon, di ba?

May TV guestings si Angie bukod sa regular show na Chowtime Na.

Sa isang panayam, sinabi ni Onemig na nananahimik na siya'y dumating pa raw ang offer ng Chowtime through Mommy Beth's recommendation. Hindi siya naging masaya sa noontime show at may isyu pang late raw dumarating si Angelica kapag nagte-taping sila.

If that's always the case, sana'y nag-decide na lang si Onemig na iwan na ang show. Naniniwala kaming hindi talent fee ang kailangan ni Onemig, kundi exposure, di ba?

Simpleng isyu ito na nagsimula sa pagiging late, pero lumaki na ng ganyan.

Siguro nga, kung inaamin ni Onemig na laos na sila ni Angelica, dapat nang may mag-retire sa kanila.

PRODUCING a six-track CD album and four music videos in just 13 days sounds impossible. Carlos “Amir of Rap” Agassi just did exactly that. The result is his third album aptly titled Amir.

“It’s a blessing (that) I worked with Gloc 9. He is the real fast guy. I bumped into him somewhere in the backstage in an out-of-town show and I told him I have plans of producing my own album. He immediately said ‘yes’ and the next day, we began polishing the songs, then recording, and so on,” says Carlos. Coincidentally, Gloc-9 is considered one of the fastest rappers in the archipelago.

Everything happened so fast even the shooting for the four music videos took only one day to finish, or to be exact, a mere 12 hours. Carlos teamed up with director Raffy Francisco.

Why the rush?

“It’s been my longtime dream to come up with another album. The last one I did was about two years ago pa. I have five songs that haven’t been recorded. I approached Star Records but they told me, I’m good only in July in 2006. That’s a long way from now,” Carlos reveals. This prompted him to start his own recording firm, Amir Carlos Entertainment Productions Inc. Carlos approached Star Records for the distribution, but he calls the shots, from marketing and promotions to accounting of sales, even producing provincial tours.

“I personally called up DJs in major radio stations and asked them to play my CD. I’d volunteer to guest in their show. It’s not that easy pala. Then there was this mall tour. I was surprised when someone told me I had to pay for the sound system, the venue, all the stuff. Promotion is more difficult than recording but I’m enjoying it. It’s different if you’re the one hands-on,” he adds. Derm Clinic and Gold’s Gym, two health establishments he patronizes, are helping him in the promotion. Expect “Amir” to be played while you’re undergoing a facial or lifting weights in these establishments.

But his effort was immediately rewarded. The first wave of release had 6,000 units. After three days on the music shelves, about 1,200 units of Amir were sold in Metro Manila alone.

Amir has six songs that Aristotle Pollisco penned. There’s the catchy “Señorita,” featuring singer Cherry Lou, the radio-friendly “Nagbago Ka” featuring Gobas and Gloc-9, the danceable “True” featuring Gayle Dizon and Carlos’ younger brother Aaron, and another potential radio hit, “Alay Ko,” featuring Gloc-9 and Aaron. There’s a remix of “Senorita,” where he is joined in by Cherry Lou, Gobas, and Aaron.

For those wondering why Amir, it’s because that is Carlos’ real name.

He laments that these days recording companies prioritize show bands, rock groups, and ballad singers. “Rap artists are last priorities. Even in bars, there’s no definite venue accepting rap artists for regular gigs. Sad but true.”

Then again, Amir is just but happy he is doing what he loves the most and he has creative control. He endorses, “I hope my album will be well-received by Filipino listeners out there. If this succeeds, I’ll start producing albums by other rap artists, starting with Gloc-9. I believe that despite problems in the industry, rap music is here to stay.”

We heard that the new TV show entitled "Bora" of The Hunks in ABS-CBN-2

is having a hard time coping with the competition, "Bahay Mo Ba To"
over at GMA-7.

Our sources said that even on its third telecast last Tuesday night,
"Bora" only garnered a rating of 15.1 percent as against the 20.9
percent of "Bahay Mo Ba To."

Some viewers told us that The Hunks' sitcom is relatively okay. The
major thing that doesn't sit well with them, they said, is that
"Bora" (which should be Boracay) is a fake. "Where can you find a show
that is entitled "Bora" and see only a set na drawing," was how they
put it.

Carlos Agassi claims his own victories

The past year has not been as kind to the career of actor-rapper Carlos Agassi as previous ones due to shake-ups in his mother network, ABS-CBN. If before he was lead star in two, three weekly TV show, he’s now down to doing support roles in "Bora" and "A.S.A.P" even as his contract with Star Records stays in limbo.

So what to do in down times like these? For Carlos, he claims his own victories.

Recently, he released "Amir" his third rap album produced independently via his own Amir Carlos, Incorporated. Bannered by two promotional tracks, "Señorita" and "Alay Ko," "Amir" has been steadily gaining ground in retail (more than a thousand copies sold during first week of release) thanks to Carlos’ untiring efforts to promote it on radio, TV and live shows abroad with his group, The Hunks.

More important to the artist, though, is the respect he has gained from the local rap community who, in the past, scoffed at his mettle and credibility.

"I now get compliments from people who used to laugh behind my back," he says during an interview at Italianni’s Restaurant in Glorietta 2. "The best I heard so far is that they did not recognize my new sound at all when they first heard it. They thought my songs were done by some foreign artist. It’s a good feeling to be acknowledged for one’s true worth."

Key to Carlos’ success for "Amir" was his decision to get Gloc 9 as producer. The latter, well respected by peers and public from both mainstream and underground scene, selflessly guided the buff rapper in finding a sound uniquely his own and one to reckon with.

"From the songwriting to recording, Gloc 9 was the perfectionist that produced results," Carlos says. "He also told and showed me things that I never knew before as a rapper that would’ve helped me then. Among these were how I could rap live without tiring myself, how to do rapid phrasing and how to write rhymes that hit home. I am more confident now with my artistry thanks to Gloc."

Apart from the music-making aspect, Carlos also learned about the business side of recording through his independent venture.

"Hindi pala basta-basta ang paggawa ng album," he says. "Its success is not determined just by having a good product on record shelves. Kelangan mo din palang maging matyaga in seeking avenues to get it heard."

He adds: "At kelangan din ng pera. (laughs) I have just begun promoting ‘Amir’ but my expenses are already in seven-digits! Sa paggawa pa lang ng mga music videos, malaki na agad ang nilabas ko. Fortunately, I have Gold’s Gym, Derm Clinic, FCUK, Dolce and Gabanna and other sponsors to help me out. If I’m not serious with this, malamang umatras na lang ako."

But that is far from happening. After all, there is nobler aim behind the push being given to "Amir."

"Gusto kong makatulong sa mga talented rappers out there who, for some reason or another, have not been given breaks by the industry. Hopefully, I not only recoup my investments here but make modest profit, too, so I could bankroll other deserving artists’ albums," ends he.

He steps out of the stage and immediately one will worry about the structural stabily of the place one is in as Troy Montero glides to the center stage to perform.

Wherever the venue maybe, whether it be at a school gymnasium, a mall, a concert hall, at a studio, a municipal hall or in a movie house, loud screams and fierce feet stomping of girls and women almost always make up the typical scenario whenever it is Troy Montero who will sing.

Actually, it does not matter what he does, whether it just be to host a show or sing, or dance, Troy ALWAYS rock the house down. And why not? Only the sight of Troy makes one sigh... only a glimpse of him makes one forget...

Cody Andrew Garabato Miller III, now known to many as Troy Montero was born in Tacoma, Seattle, Washington, USA and when he came to the Philippines for the first time, he was just trying to learn more about the culture of half of his heritage. He never even thought this would be a typical scene he would have to get used to two years ago. And although his family and friends always knew he was special and that he will make it big someday, he did not even dream he would be such a popular TV and movie personality in the land of his mother's roots someday.

But how could a gorgeous face like that and a nice stance like his go unnoticed by the showbiz world? On July 30, 1977, the fate of Philippine showbiz was destined to change. Little did anyone know that 23 years after, it would be revolutionized and freshened by a new face, a new talent, a new star.

From the time of his birth, his Mom and Dad has always been proud of their first born son and his whole family really thought that something big was in store for their Cody but they just did not know what, exactly.

Dad Cody Miller Sr.'s German Irish gene's and his Mom, Cynthia Miclat Garabato's Filipino bloodline proved to be the perfect combination to come up with not only such a good-looking young man but a multi-faceted individual. The Miclat's are from Zambales, Phils. Troy's grandfather, Davis Garabato, being a military man, was always being assigned everywhere. Being so, Josephine Miclat, his grandma, gave birth to his Mom, Cynthia in Texas, USA.

What earned him a place in the hearts and minds of the Filipinos is how he was able to maintain Filipino values in spite of having a very typical American upbringing. The admiration of many not only came from the overflowing talent this guy has but from the way he always talk about his family - especially his Mom. And him earning the title " Mama's boy " do not even embarrass him one bit. Infact, he is proud of it, which makes him all the more endearing to his fans.

His closeness to his family, which is very evident when he vocalizes how he misses them on TV, being so far away from them, make him one of the most respected celebrities in Philippine Showbiz today. If only for these, he is already a rare find, a true gem. Someone worth idolizing.He had always loved to sing.

In his free time, he would write down poems and later on convert them into songs. Back in Seattle, he and his friends would form a band and do some jamming. He dreams of becoming a director too, or someone who works behind the cameras. He would bring along a notebook anywhere to write his ideas on just incase something pops up inside his head. But destiny and fate formed a rare integration to come up with something for him. It brought out in him a talent he never even knew he had.

Just two weeks in the Philippines, he was offered to host a dance show called "Keep On Dancing". Back in the states, he has modeled and appeared in instructional videos for workout machines and even appeared as extra in a film , but this new job was totally new to him.

Maribeth Bichara, a well known choreographer in the Philippines, who was then scouting for a new face and talent to host a new dance show for ABS-CBN, spotted Troy in a club and had asked him to audition for the show.

Since then, Troy's show has been rating so high and his popularity has soared.A favorite endorser by many products such as Levis and several fashion designers, it was also because of his first TV commercial for VIVA! Mineral Water, that Troy found himself in the midst of a lot of controversies and which also caused him his falling out with his discoverer/former manager Daddie Wowie Roxas. Troy kept Mum about the whole issue and survived all the storms that were generated because of that incident. Many thought that that was the end of Mr. Montero, but once again, the line " You can never put a good man down " proved to be true for Troy.

His star remained among the heavens and was still constantly included in the list of Manila's bests for whatever. Just recently, the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Foundation awarded Troy the " Most Promising Male Actor/Celebrity" for the year 1999-2000 along with Vanessa Del Bianco, who bagged the award for the female counterpart.

With only his inability to speak the Tagalog language as his set-back, it seems that everything else is going well for Troy. A next movie with Vina Morales and the Philippine Showbiz's original bad boy Robin Padilla will again showcase Troy's acting talent and will surely add another feather in the cap of our golden boy.

It seems as though it was just yesterday that Troy was handling his own catering business, owning his own donut shop or helping Dad in their family owned real-estate business back in Seattle, now, Troy is enjoying his new found niche in the business of entertaining people.

And though he really misses his family, it helps that his younger brother KC is also in the business and is equally as popular as his older brother. If only for the thought that Troy was instrumental in paving the way for his younger brothers, he appreciates the world he now belongs to even if the same world never believes that his brothers are never competitions for him. KC, now the newest MTV Asia VJ and Colby, who now has legions of followers himself, remains his bestfriends and confidants.

The Montero brothers are known for being close and feircely protective of each other and nothings else ruins Troy's day than some reporter's attempt to pit them with each other. Troy has been linked with so many women in and out of showbiz. But Troy swears that he is concentrating on his career at the moment. He is collaborating with friend, and fellow Classified Media talent, Deither Ocampo in writing a story line for a dream movie they both will star in.

Everyday, Troy tries his best to learn something new andadjust to the totally new system he found himself in. Not even the bad publicity he gets every now and then, the talks that he is gay, or he is just a flash in the pan, even the talks that he is an ingrate dampen his spirits. Quite often misunderstood, he learned, the hard way, that " It is not what you say that hurts the people the most, but its what you don't say". Without compromising his dignity and self-respect, Troy tries, as best as he knows how to, reach out and embrace the showbiz world without selling himself short.

He only has his fans to thank for the inspiration he needs to go through another day of an intrigue-hungry business. Whereever the road will take Troy again, whatever is in store for him, for sure showbiz will never be the same again if only because Troy was in it.

Once a rapper, always a rapper.

Or so claims Carlos Agassi who is "trapped in rap" sans regrets, sans apologies.

That’s why even if the band craze seems to be easing rap out of the scene, Carlos soldiers on. He has even put up his own company, Amir Carlos, Inc., which is producing his latest rap album, Amir (distributed by Star Records).

"Rap will never be gone," adds Carlos, "it’s here to stay."

Under his company, Carlos plans to produce more albums, not just his own but those of rap artists he plans to discover and build up.

"Dr. Dre discovered Eminem, and Eminem in turn discovered 50 Cent who produced an album for G-Unit. I want to do the same thing. I don’t mind kung break-even lang ako sa album ko; I am determined to pursue my goal."

Carlos (Amir, meaning Prince in Arab) says he has poured all his savings into the Amir album which carries six original compositions, all his own (in collaboration with Gloc 9).

"The first cut is Amir, a Tagalog rap which talks about me. Some people can’t believe nor accept the fact that I rap because they look at me basically as an actor and as a Hunk member. Ang hitsura ko daw hindi rapper. But I beg them to give me a chance, to lend me an ear, and see what kind of rap I’m doing.

"The second cut, Nagbago Ka, is a rap-rock fusion ala Linkin Park. It’s a love song about a girl who leaves her boyfriend.

"The third cut, Señorita, is a dance-rap which I did with Cherry Lou.

"The fourth cut, True, is a rap love song which I did with my little brother Aaron.

"The fifth cut, Alay Ko, is the song I’m dedicating to my fans.

"The sixth cut is called Señorita Remix, again with Cherry Lou, Aaron and an underground rapper."

Before we get wrapped up in rap, let’s uncover the other side of Carlos Agassi the Rapper.

l. Who is your role model(s)?

"Among local rap artists, siempre iba talaga sina Andrew E. and FrancisM. They kind of started everything for me. When I came back from Bahrain, I went into music because of Andrew E.’s Humanap Ka ng Panget and FrancisM’s Mga Kababayan Ko. Among foreign artists, sina Jay-Z and Eminem. At first, Jay-Z wasn’t taken seriously as a rapper, until people stopped and listened to his music. Now, he is one of the world’s best rappers. He’s into producing not only albums of his own and those of other artists but also a clothing line. That’s the career path I want to follow. Eminem also struggled before he was recognized; he got his break only after 10 years."

2. Who really discovered you for showbiz?

"It was talent scout Rapi Revilla who first saw me while I was eating at Friday’s. He put me in commercials and then brought me to Mr. M (Johnny Manahan) at (the ABS-CBN) Talent Center which launched me as member of one of the Star Circle batches."

3. Who is your favorite fantasy figure?

"Beyoncé, of course! Isn’t she sexy when she’s onstage?"

4. Who do you turn to when you have a problem?

"I pray. I turn to Him. He is like a dad and a bestfriend to me. He makes me feel calm and at ease. There’s also my mom (Rowena Damaso). Yes, I am a Mama’s Boy. And my stepfather (Fahad Al-Hanaki.)"

5. Who do you consider your true friend(s)?

"My brothers Aaron and Michael. Blood is really thicker than water. Even if you’re at fault, kakampihan ka pa rin nila."

1. What is your greatest fear?

"I’m afraid of the dark...of a place where I am alone. I must confess for the first time that I cannot sleep alone, so I sleep with my brother Michael or Aaron or my mom. Takot ako mag-isa, takot ako sa dilim."

2. What’s one experience that you never forget?

"It happened during the Kapamilya Caravan in L.A. a few months ago. Aaron and I were doing a number together. He appeared onstage first; I was supposed to follow. As soon as Aaron came out, he was met by deafening applause. You would think that it was Piolo Pascual who came out onstage. I got goose pimples. Remember, Aaron is new in showbiz. At that time, he had just won as Most Promising Performer at the Aliw Awards. I was so proud of my brother that I forgot I was supposed to rap after him. I’ll never forget that experience."

3. What type of girl appeals to you?

"Basically, a simple girl. When I say simple, I mean yung ayos niya simpleng-simple, walanghindi mayabang, she can mix and start a conversation with anybody."

4. What would you have been if you were not in showbiz today?

"A basketball player. Now that I’m working out, I want naman to be a bodybuilder. As a kid, I was a sakristan so there was a time when I wanted to be a priest. I have several relatives who are priests. Monsignor Quizon (of Tagaytay) is my lolo."

5. What do you consider your best achievement so far?

"Having lasted this long in this business."

WHERE

1. Where do you get your inspiration?

"Well, aside from the Lord, I get it from the fans. If I perform even only in front of three people who are very warm and very appreciative, parang mas ginaganahan kang ibigay ang best mo."

2. Where would you rather be aside from the Philippines, and why?

"There’s no other place I want to be except the Philippines. I was born here and I spent part of my childhood in Bahrain but I came back because this is where I want to stay."

3. Where did you get your talent in rap?

"I’m a frustrated singer. You know, my brothers and I suffer from a congenital defect in our throats kaya madali kaming mapaos.We got it from our mom. May nakaharang sa vocal cords namin. But we love music, so...I listened to the likes of Andrew E., FrancisM, Eminem, LL Cool J and Will Smith and I got hooked on rap. I’m fascinated by rap’s poetic quality."

4. Where is your Achilles’ Heel?

"My weak part? Gullible? No, I’m not. A sucker for sob stories? No, I’m not. You know, I took up Psychology at La Salle so I can tell what kind of person you are a few minutes into our conversation. I’m a workaholic. I hate being idle. I want to be productive, to be always at my best."

5. Where do you go to unwind?

"I work out and that’s how I relieve myself of stress. I also play basketball. Or I watch movies with my brothers. Or I just stay in my room doing nothing, just eating or having a massage. My favorite hideaway is Shangri-La Mactan in Cebu. It’s my paradise."

WHEN

1. When are you at your best (performance level)?

"As soon as I wake up and I work out. It keeps me awake. First thing I do as soon as I wake up is pray to keep my soul awake. Basically, before I sleep, I already plan what to do the next day so that when I wake up I’m always on time and I know what to do."

2. When did you have your first kiss (and with whom)?

"It was in grade six. I was 12. With my classmate. I was shy and torpe then and it was she who initiated it."

3. When do you feel depressed?

"When I’m alone and I’m lonely; when I want something done pero hindi nagagawa."

4. When was the last time you cried?

"Just a while ago. I was thanking the Lord for all the blessings that I have – my family, my work, my health, everything!"

5. When are you happiest?

"When I’m surrounded by positive people. I hate being with negative people. Nakakahawa ‘yon, eh! Di ba one rotten apple can spoil one whole basketful of good apples?"

HOW

1. How do you pray?

"I’m half-Iranian and half-Filipino but I’m Catholic. My dad is a Muslim while my brother Aaron is a Christian. How do I pray? Aside from hearing Mass every Sunday, I simply close my eyes and talk to Him. I always ask Him to take care of me and keep me away from harm."

2. How are you different from the four other Hunks (Jericho Rosales, Piolo Pascual, Bernard Palanca and Diether Ocampo)?

"We don’t only look different, we also have different passions and talents. Mine is rapping, basically. I host, I rap and I dance. Jericho is an intense actor and so is Piolo. BJ (Bernard) is good in bida-kontrabida roles and is also into music. Diet has his own forte, light-drama among them."

3. How are you related to Andre Agassi?

"What I know is that Andre’s dad is Iranian. He’s a naturalized American, from Iran. Am I related to him? I don’t know but how I wish I were!"

4. How do you maintain your body?

"Health is wealth. Eat right. Get enough sleep. Exercise. Try to be happy. Don’t let problems get you down."

5. How much of you is Iranian and how much is Filipino?

"One hundred percent of me is Filipino. I guess the only Iranian in me is the hair all over my body and my looks. Just joking!"

The Hunks Tour 2005

The Hunks, composed of ABS-CBN Star Magic artists Piolo Pascual, Jericho Rosales, Bernard Palanca, Carlos Agassi, and Diether Ocampo recently toured the US, as part of the first leg of their series of shows.

Before leaving, Carlos launched his newest rap album titled Amir in which he served as executive producer. He was on top of everything, from choosing the songs, planning the album cover concept as well as the pictorial and the music video of “Trip.”

According to Gloc 9, who helped Carlos in producing the album, Amir is the best album that Carlos did. And Carlos is hoping that the album would meet expectations. So is Gloc 9, who would like to see Carlos earn the respect he wants as a rap artist.

That Carlos started out as an artista before his foray into rap music was a drawback. It didn’t sit well for some rap artists to see somebody like Carlos getting into their turf. But Carlos beckons all rap enthusiasts to check out his Amir album and hear for themselves how much he has improved on his musicality and artistry as a rap artist.

"Amir" The Album

ABS-CBN Star Magic artist Carlos Agassi is very excited to share with everyone that his latest album entitled "Amir", which is now available in the market.

"Amir" is his third album and has six tracks (three English and three Tagalog), all original R&B with a dash of rap. Carlos is doubly proud of this album because aside from performing, he is also the Executive Producer. According to Carlos, "I learned so much in the process of producing this album. I really poured my heart and soul into this project. You can expect a more mature Carlos in this album, vomcone with more substance." He oversaw everything - from the songs, album cover, pictorial, the MTV. He drew inspiration from fans who were clamoring for a rap album when he was in the US for the Kapamilya Summer Caravan. With this album, he dreams of breaking into the international scene.

Last October 23, 2005, the album was launched on ASAP '05. The same date also marked the break of the music video of the single "True", the album's carrier single. "Amir" is distributed by Star Records and has Gold's Gym for its major sponsor and Hanford and DNG as minor sponsors. Carlos is also busy with his television show s Bora and ASAP '05.

He was also part of the successful US tour with the Hunks.

Amir is now available on CDs and cassettes at record stores nationwide, under Amir Carlos Entertainment Productions, Inc., and distributed by Star Records. The album is also available for order online via Titik Pilipino. Buy only the original!
